…and head for Republic Monetary Exchange!

As we recently reported in this space, official central bank gold purchases averaged about 1,000 tons per year over the last four years. That is roughly double the prior decade’s pace.

The Iran war has interrupted, but not reversed, that trend.

We reported the news as well that played large around the world that gold had outpacedU.S. Treasuries instruments in reserve portfolios at the end of 2025.

Since we view de-dollarization as a monetary megatrend that will have outsized impact on the value of the dollar and the prosperity of the American people, here are a couple of supplemental points.

Bar chart of expected total reserve changes in 5 years by asset: Higher: Gold 84%, RMB 67%, EUR 42%, USD 11%; Unchanged: Gold 11%, RMB 27%, EUR 38%, USD 15%; Lower: Gold 5%, RMB 5%, EUR 19%, other 74% (combined). The World Gold Council reports that in the first quarter of this year central bank demand reached 244 tons. That is a 17 percent increase over the prior quarter. Poland and Uzbekistan were among the leading buyers, with continued buying from China and others.

Respondents to the WGC’s Central Bank Survey overwhelmingly (89%) believe that global central bank gold reserves will increase over the next 12 months. A record 45 percent of respondents expect their own gold reserves will also increase this year.

The majority of respondents (74%) see moderate or significantly lower US dollar holdings within global reserves over the next five years.

The WGC survey also discloses the reasons that central banks find it important of own gold:

1.) For gold’s performance in times of crisis.
2.) As a long-term store of value.
3.) As an important portfolio diversifier.
4.) Because of a policy of diversification.
5.) As a hedge against geopolitical risks.

Infographic: top reasons for holding gold (n=69): crisis performance 90%; store of value 84%; diversification 83%; diversification policy 80%; geopolitical risk hedge 78%.All of those rationale apply, although we will add one more which central banks might not have wished to highlight because of their complicity: As protection against central bank digital and other money printing.
