Is America’s Gold in Fort Knox?
Questions about America’s gold in Fort Knox, Kentucky have popped back up – after having disappeared down the memory hole a year ago.
Reporter Sheryl Attkisson brought up the gold in a recent interview with President Trump.
“It’s a very interesting question. We played with that. I wonder if they left the gold in Fort Knox, because they steal a lot,” Trump responded. “I do want to go to Fort Knox sometime.”
Elon Musk elevated the Fort Knox issue to public attention a year ago. He messaged on X, “Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox? Maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not. That gold is owned by the American public! We want to know if it’s still there.”
But Washington dropped the issue as quickly as it dropped DOGE – the Department of Government Efficiency.
In 2017, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and former Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnel strolled around briefly in Fort Knox to look at the gold.
It was a perfectly useless trip.
It was clear that the visit was arranged to provide Mnuchin and his wife a preferred location and opportunity to view the dramatic solar eclipse that day, which could be viewed in its fullness from Fort Knox. Attending to America’s gold was only a pretext to travel on a government plane at taxpayer expense.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), called the trip “an almost instant meme for government excess.”
The trip on a military aircraft cost taxpayers nearly $33,000. CREW filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and found that the secretary and his wife could have taken a more readily available FAA aircraft that would have cost the taxpayers half as much, or even traveled on a commercial flight for $2,000.
In any case, an honest accounting for your gold (Musk is right; if you are an American citizen it is your gold) was not really on anyone’s agenda. Mnuchin offered up a perfunctory remark: “Glad the gold is safe!”
Thanks a lot.
There are supposed to be 147.3 million ounces of gold at the Fort Knox depository with additional U.S. gold held by the Federal Reserve in New York.
The government assesses the book value of $42.22 per ounce, although it has been a very long time since gold was anywhere near that price.
Foreign governments are suspicious enough that they have been repatriating their gold from other national banks for some time now. As for Americans, we have not been able to get a simple audit of the Federal Reserve or of our gold. By the way, an audit is not just an inventory. It goes beyond counting bars with the Fed or at Fort Knox. It even goes beyond assaying bars to make sure they are gold. An audit seeks to know if the title has been compromised, if there are multiple claims to some or any of it, if the gold has been pledged, promised, loaned, hypothecated or re-hypothecated. That seems to be where the real risk may be.
But there has been no audit.
This is no way to run a business. Or a government.
Now, the tide has gone out on our financial system. Big changes are headed our way.
You need gold and silver in these uncertain times to protect your wealth, yourself, and your family.
